Tottenham would suffer a significant financial blow by missing out on millions of pounds in European revenue if the season is decided on a points-per-game basis.

Uefa yesterday opened the door for leagues not to complete their domestic seasons, but insisted European places must be decided based on clubs’ performances in the 2019-20 campaign to date.

With the Premier League thought to view play-offs as unlikely if the regular season cannot be finished, final positions could come down to points-per-game. Under that

scenario, Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester and Chelsea would finish in the top four but, as it stands, City are banned from European competition next season for breaches of financial fair play regulations.

Manchester United would therefore take the final Champions League spot, with Sheffield United, Wolves and Arsenal qualifying for the Europa League. The Gunners would leapfrog Spurs into eighth place, having played a game less than Jose Mourinho’s side.

It would leave Spurs facing a season without European football for the first time in 10 years.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already told fans that missing out on Champions League qualification would reduce Mourinho’s ability to spend in the transfer market.
