Clubs across Europe are set to battle it out for Marcus Thuram after Borussia Monchengladbach confirmed the striker will leave on a free transfer in the summer.

The French forward was reportedly a target for Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and more in January with an £8million price tag placed on his future ahead of his contract expiring.

Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has now admitted that Thuram will depart when his deal is up after rejecting a renewal with the German club.

“With Marcus Thuram, we stretched,” he told Sport1.

“We have to accept that it’s the even bigger clubs where Marcus might go. The fact that players will leave us for free is not a positive situation and I can’t sugarcoat it.”

Thuram, who played in the Qatar World Cup final for France, has scored 14 goals this season and is expected to attract interest from across the continent.
