The Football Association are open to staging more England women’s games at Wembley following the high demand to attend last Sunday’s match against Germany.

A record crowd of 55,000 bought tickets for the friendly and that figure would have been higher had the FA not capped sales because of engineering works on public transport.

The game was played in front of a larger crowd than the men’s fixture between England and Norway in September, and the FA will consider hosting further women’s fixtures at the national stadium.

There are no plans in place to return to Wembley as fixtures are arranged on a game-by-game basis, but matches could also be taken to big Premier League grounds if there is a demand for tickets.

“The aspiration would be there [to play more games at Wembley],” an FA spokesman said. “Looking at the success of Sunday’s game, there is clearly an appetite for it. The bigger picture is trying to increase interest in the women’s game.

“We will look at every opportunity we can to promote the game and make it accessible to spectators. If there is an increased interest, we would look to get the games in larger venues.”

The previous largest crowd to have attended a home England women’s international was 29,092 at Etihad Stadium in 2005. Great Britain’s Olympic team were watched by 70,584 when they beat Brazil 1-0 at Wembley during London 2012.

England are planning further games as they prepare for next year’s World Cup in Canada.
