Hefty tax bill: Premier League players coughed up £891m in tax during the 2013-14 season

The extent of the huge amount of tax paid by the Premier League, its clubs and players has been revealed after new figures showed the country received £2.4 billion in tax during the 2013-14 season.

According to an Economic Impact Assessment conducted by Ernst & Young (EY), the league, all the players playing in it and the 20 clubs that employ them paid £2.4bn in tax - of which footballers contributed £891million.

To help put that in perspective, EY worked out that the £2.4bn amount could pay for about 93,000 full-time police constables.

Along with the amount of tax paid, the Premier League was also found to support 103,354 full-time UK jobs while being estimated to have added £3.4bn to the UK's economy.

Speaking about the figures in the annual review, EY's Chief Economist Mark Gregory said: "The success of the Premier League, which is grounded in the quality of the football competition, has created a 'cycle of growth'.
