Newcastle are confident they will win the race to sign Chelsea starlet Tammy Abraham on loan but no agreement has been reached yet.

Abraham is regarded as one of the best young strikers in the game and scored 26 goals on loan at Bristol City last season.

Chelsea have earmarked him as a possible first team player of the future but want him to get some regular football in the Premier League first.

Newcastle were convinced they had persuaded the 19-year-old to join them at the end of last week, but Brighton remain a threat.

It is believed Abraham is having some reservations about moving far away from his family to the north east and would prefer to stay in the south.

Brighton have held talks with Abraham, who has been called up to play for England at the European Under-21 Championships this summer, since the weekend.

Chelsea intend to hand Abraham a new contract before he departs, which could see his wages doubled to £50,000-a-week.

The Blues will seek assurances from Abraham's next loan club that he will play regularly before agreeing to any deal.
