Wojciech Szczesny insists he never had any intention of leaving Arsenal and is targeting a long stay at the club.

After lengthy negotiations, the 23-year-old goalkeeper agreed a new long-term contract — thought to be a four-year deal — last week.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had been interested in signing a new No1 but, as Standard Sport revealed in August, he then told Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski they would be fighting between themselves to be first choice.

Arsenal consequently signed Emiliano Viviano as cover, prompting Szczesny to commit his future after establishing himself ahead of Fabianski.

Szczesny said: “It is important [to have things sorted] but, before I signed, I knew where my future was so I wasn’t worried about that too much. Sometimes it takes time to negotiate your deal but I am delighted to be staying not only for the years I have signed up for but a few after that.”
