Spurs look to have won the race to sign South Africa international Steven Pienaar after the Everton midfielder revealed the transfer on his personal Twitter page.

The 28-year-old had earlier arrived at Tottenham's training ground to put the finishing touches to his move, believed to be worth £3million.

He was set to undergo a medical before putting pen to paper on a reported four-year contract after failing to agree terms with London rivals Chelsea.

Pienaar wrote on Twitter: "To end speculation I am going to Spurs.

"I've had brilliant years at Everton and it will always be a special place in my heart."

He later added he would be wearing the number 40 shirt.

New team-mate Jermain Defoe also took to the social networking site to welcome Pienaar's arrival, suggesting it proved Tottenham were now the equal of Chelsea.

The striker said: "signings (sic) Steven Pienaar is a massive coup for spurs this deal really shows how far we have come when we a top player rejects a big club 4 us."

Once all the paperwork is complete, Pienaar would officially become the north Londoner's second January signing, with international Bongani Kumalo having already penned a pre-contract agreement.
