Steven Gerrard is still the best midfielder at Liverpool, according to his former team-mate, Michael Owen.

Gerrard, 34, has been singled out for criticism by some during Liverpool’s stuttering start for the Premier League season, with suggestions being made his age is catching up with him.

However, manager Brendan Rodgers announced earlier in the week that Gerrard, who made his first-team debut for Liverpool just over sixteen years ago, had been offered a new contract at Anfield.

The midfielder is yet to decide whether to commit another year to the club, but for Owen, Gerrard still remains a greatly influential member of the squad.

“He may not be the Gerrard of five years ago, but even if he’s slowed down a yard, he is the best midfielder at the club,” Owen wrote on Sportlobster.com.

“Unfortunately, he’s reached the stage of his career whereby every bad game gets attributed to his age.

“I don’t think he needs to move.

“He can still have a huge effect on the Liverpool team.”
