Steven Gerrard is set to escape rap for 'V' gesture

11 April 2012

Steven Gerrard is set to escape any punishment from the Football Association despite appearing to make an obscene gesture at referee Andre Marriner in Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Wigan last night.

Gerrard seemed to aim a V-sign and mouth an obscenity at Marriner just after being booked in the 81st minute.

The FA are still waiting for the referee's match report before confirming whether they will take action, but it is understood they consider that the matter was dealt with at the time.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez claimed he was unaware of the incident. He said: "I don't know, I was too far away."

Hugo Rodallega's goal condemned Liverpool to a ninth defeat of the season.
