Spurs close on Ajax star Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has travelled to Holland in a bid to sign Ajax star Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgium defender is valued at £12.1 million by the Dutch club, although Spurs are believed not to want to pay more than £9.7m for the 25-year-old.

Vertonghen has told Ajax that Spurs are the only English team he would consider joining - despite Harry Redknapp's team missing out on Champions League football next season after Chelsea's dramatic victory over Bayern Munich on Saturday.

With Spurs expected to miss out on Lille's Eden Hazard - who is expected to move to Mancheter City - Spurs are now said to be targeting Fulham's Moussa Dembele and Blackburn's Junior Hollett to add firepower to their forward line next season.

Talks are also planned with Marseille striker Loic Remy to see if he would still consider a move to White Hart Lane.

Emmanuel Adebayor is also in negotiations with Levy after his 18-goal season on loan from Manchester City.

Yesterday he Tweeted: “Loved my spell at Tottenham. We are working hard with the chairman to make it permanent. Will keep you informed!!”
