Spurs have agreed a £17m deal with Brazilian club Corinthians for their highly-rated midfielder Paulinho, it was reported today.

Paulinho is currently on international duty at the Confederations Cup with Brazil, where he has become an integral part of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side.

"The situation is well underway," Corinthians’ director of football and former Arsenal player Edu said.

"We have to agree on some details of the negotiation, so I can’t say he will leave yet, but the negotiations are good."

The 24-year-old recently scored against England at the Maracana during their friendly against Brazil.

The signing would be Andre Villas-Boas's first of the summer as he looks to strengthen his Spurs squad in a bid to secure Champions League football at White Hart Lane.

Spurs were told earlier this week they would have to increase their bid for Paulinho, with the North London club originally hoping to pay around £15m, according to the Daily Mail.

Spurs have now decided to meet his release clause, which stands at £17m.

Paulinho has said he will not make a decision until after the Confederations Cup.
