Tottenham drew 1-1 with Southampton at St Mary’s on Tuesday after Harry Kane’s penalty against their ten-man hosts.

Saints enjoyed by far the better of the first-half and were rewarded for their hard work with James Ward-Prowse’s fine strike from the edge of the area.

Mohammed Salisu’s long throw was not cleared far enough and Ward-Prowse scored for the third game running.

There was a growing sense of frustration from the St Mary’s faithful over referee Anthony Taylor’s decision-making, leading to Ralph Hasenhuttl earning a booking shortly after Salisu earned a first yellow of his own.

But there was no complaining when the defender wiped out Son Heung-min in the area after 39 minutes, gifting Spurs a route back into the game that Kane duly took - scoring with Southampton down to ten due to Salisu’s second booking.

Not like the hosts needed it, but a serious warning sign came early in the second period when Harry Winks set Kane free for a calm finish one-on-one. Yet, VAR rightly called the play back for a narrow offside.

And yet, the early hard work and defensive solidity that Southampton had displayed remained.

Tottenham had another goal rejected after Fraser Forster was judged to have been fouled by Matt Doherty as he collected a high cross, while the Irishman failed with two attempts from good runs in behind.
