Crystal Palace were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Southampton and lost captain Scott Dann to injury on a bad night at St Mary's.

Dann appeared to strain his hamstring in the first half and is surely a doubt to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Palace are already without James Tomkins after he suffered a knee injury against Stoke on Sunday so the sight of Dann limping off will be a concern for Alan Pardew.

Southampton progressed thanks to goals either side of half-time from Charlie Austin and Jake Hesketh.

Austin put Southampton ahead from the penalty spot on 33 minutes after Martin Kelly brought down Shane Long inside the area.

Palace, who made eight changes for the game, almost fell further behind before the break but Wayne Hennessey saved well from both Austin and Cuco Martina.

There was more concern for Palace in first-half stoppage time when Damien Delaney collided with the side of the goal when he cleared off the line from Long.

Delaney looked in some pain but was fine to continue.

Southampton sealed victory on 63 minutes when Hesketh fired past Hennessey after the Palace goalkeeper had done well to save from Long.

Palace never looked like getting back into the game and slumped to a disappointing defeat.
