Sorry England crash out of World Cup finals

Football's coming home: England eliminated with a game to spare

It's official. England are out of the World Cup following Costa Rica's 1-0 victory over Italy.

Defeats to Italy and Uruguay left Roy Hodgson's side praying for a miracle, with Italy needing to win their final two matches for England to have any hope of progressing to the knock-out stages, their worst ever performance at a World Cup.

That miracle was crushed within 24 hours.

Costa Rica, a side considered to have caused an upset against the Uruguayans in their opening match, hammered home the final nail in the coffin, and confirm Jorge Luis Pinto's side's place in the knock-out stages, with victory over Italy in Recife.

FA chairman Greg Dyke has confirmed their wish for Roy Hodgson to remain in charge ahead of their Euro 2016 campaign, with the former Liverpool already having stated that he would not step away from the role.

Although a matter of when, not if, following defeat in Sao Paulo on Thursday, England's elimination becomes even more harrowing in the knowledge that they still have one more game to go.

Tuesday's clash with Costa Rica in Belo Horizonte now counts for nothing as far as England are concerned.

Costa Rica will be hoping to finish as group winners, and can yet further England's misery with a victory, which would see the Three Lions return to home, pointless.
