Mauricio Pochettino was 'very happy' with Son Heung-Min's debut display for Tottenham during the 1-0 victory against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs recorded their first win of the campaign at the Stadium of Light, courtesy of Ryan Mason's late strike, and climbed to 12th place in the Premier League table.

The South Korea international joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer and was deployed on the right hand side of a 4-2-3-1 formation against the Black Cats alongside Dele Alli.

The versatile 23-year-old produced several smart touches and was involved in a number of encouraging passing interchanges before his withdrawal on the hour mark and Pochettino was delighted with the manner of the new arrival's start to his career in England.

"I am very happy with Son, he played really well.He is a good player for us," said Pochettino. "We are very pleased with our performance. It was a hard game for us, an open game, but I think we dominated it and we deserved to win the match."

The Argentine coach is eager for Spurs to build momentum and is hopeful that his side can improve after finally claiming their maiden victory of the season at the fifth time of asking.

"It’s another clean sheet, the first victory of the league after five games, and now we can move on. This will help us with our confidence for the next games.

"The goal showed how we tried to play and what our philosophy is, it was fantastic," he said.

Son's arrival has been tipped to help ease the goalscoring burden on Harry Kane, who failed to open his account for the campaign against Dick Advocaat's side, despite having several opportunities in front of goal.

Tottenham entertain Qarabag FK in their first Europa League group game on Thursday night before they face a London derby against Crystal Palace next Saturday.
