Sir Alex Ferguson will play his stars in Europa League

11 April 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has conceded he got it wrong in the Champions League this season as Manchester United prepare to make their debut in the Europa League.

The Scot admits his squad-rotation policy was a contributory factor in United being relegated to the Europa League after they lost a do-or-die final group game in Basel 2-1.

United face Ajax in Amsterdam tonight - the first time since 1995 that they will play in a Euro competition other than the Champions League - and Ferguson said: "Going by our previous form in the group stages, to make changes was working fine for us because our home record was always so good.

"But we threw it away in our home game against Basel and were unlucky against Benfica.

"That caught us short and we suffered for it. Now players are coming back I am sure we can combine the Premier League and Europa League so I would certainly try to play my strongest team in each round now."
