Who is Serhou Guirassy? Bargain French striker linked with Arsenal

Matt Davies18 May 2020

Arsenal are reportedly planning a summer move for promising Amiens forward Serhou Guirassy, with a host of clubs put on alert after the French side were relegated from Ligue 1.

The 24-year-old - prior to the season's early conclusion due to the coronavirus pandemic - scored nine goals in 23 league games in a standout campaign.

Arsenal fans may not have fond memories of the forward, however. Then playing for German side Cologne, Guirassy controversially won and converted a penalty as Arsenal fell to a 1-0 Europa League loss in the 2017-18 season.

But with Arsenal's transfer funds expected to be limited this summer, Guirassy could prove to be a real bargain signing, the Daily Mail reporting The Gunners to be plotting a move this summer.

Career to date

Guirassy was born in France and began his footballing career with Stade Lavallois, who play their football in the third tier of French football.

The forward joined Lille for a fee of around £1million in 2015 but managed just eight appearances for the club, failing to register a single goal.

From Lille, Guirassy enjoyed a thoroughly successful six-month loan spell with fellow French side Auxerre, where he scored eight goals in 16 games, before eventually signing a five-year deal with Cologne in 2016.

The Frenchman again endured a difficult period, however. Guirassy had to wait nearly a year to make his debut after undergoing meniscus surgery shortly after his arrival, the forward eventually scoring six goals in 37 games across a three-year spell.

Guirassy signed for Amiens in 2019 after a successful loan period and appears to have found his feet since.

Style of play

The six-foot-two-inch powerful striker has the presence of a traditional target man; strong in the air and a constant battle for defenders, but also with some real pace and an ability to get in behind the backline.

Guirassy raised his profile with an impressive double against eventual Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain back in February, the forward showing his composure and clinical nature in front of goal in both goals.

The 24-year-old proved he has the instinct to be a top-level forward.

Interest from elsewhere

As stated, Guirassy is being a tracked by a number of clubs across Europe, fellow English sides West Ham and Bournemouth reportedly interested.

The Frenchman's agent Mark McKay, speaking on the speculation surrounding Guirassy, told reporters: "A number of clubs in England and across Europe have shown an interest in Serhou after he performed so well for Amiens.

"In the current climate due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic clubs might not be able to pay huge transfer fees like they used to and, in that respect, Serhou could prove to be a bargain in this window.

"Serhou's preference has always been to play in the English Premier League, but Amiens will evaluate all offers that come in for him and make a decision from there."
