Serge Aurier has vowed to act professionally "on and off the pitch" and make the fans proud of him after completing a move to Tottenham amid concerns over his past.

The right-back was punished by former club Paris Saint-Germain after using homophobic language towards then-manager Laurent Blanc and former team-mates Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Salvatore Sirigu in February 2016.

Aurier was sent to the reserves for over month but shortly afterward was convicted of assaulting a police officer. The defender overturned the decision on appeal as the final hurdle of his protracted move to the Premier League.

Upon confirmation of his signing, Aurier underlined the importance of the fans acceptance and described his five-year deal as a "fresh start".

"This is a huge and exciting opportunity at a massive football club and I am determined to prove myself as a professional both on and off the pitch," Aurier told the club's official website.

"This is a fresh start for me and I will do everything to make the Spurs fanbase, which is huge and diverse, proud of me.

"The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier.”
