Sebastien Squillaci set to seal Arsenal deal

Top Gunner: New signing Sebastien Squillaci
11 April 2012

Arsenal are set to complete the £5million signing of Sebastien Squillaci from Sevilla after the player underwent a medical at the club's training ground today.

The 30-year-old arrived in north London last night to sign a two-year contract following Sevilla's decision to accept the Gunners' bid.

Squillaci asked not to be selected in the Spanish club's Champions League qualifier against Sporting Braga last week so as not to jeopardise the deal by being ineligible for European football upon joining Arsenal.

Manager Arsene Wenger has been desperate to find cover at centre-back after William Gallas, Sol Campbell, Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre all left the club.

Laurent Koscielny, who arrived for £8.5m earlier this summer, was suspended last weekend, meaning midfielder Alex Song had to deputise alongside Thomas Vermaleen in defence as Arsenal hammered Blackpool 6-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
