Scott McTominay damages knee ligaments in Man Utd's win over Newcastle

Scott McTominay damaged knee ligaments in Manchester United’s victory against Newcastle.

The midfielder left Old Trafford on crutches after being substituted at half time in the 4-1 win.

United will assess the extent of the damage before Saturday’s trip to Burnley – but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed he is unlikely to be involved in the game at Turf Moor.

“He’s done his ligament in the knee probably,” said the Norwegian after McTominay clashed with Matty Longstaff early on. “I don’t know how bad. Let’s see. The boy has got the biggest heart and when they knocked together and you see the attitude of the kid and everyone to be fair.

“I’m not sure if he’s going to be ready for Saturday, but we’ve seen him heal quickly before.”

McTominay’s injury was the one negative in what was otherwise a hugely encouraging day for Solskjaer.

United delivered the perfect response to Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Watford – producing their biggest Premier League win since beating Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day of the season.

Matty Longstaff gave Newcastle the lead after 17 minutes, but Anthony Martial equalised shortly after.

Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford fired United into a two-goal advantage by half time, before Martial got his second after the break.

Solskjaer added: “You saw the intent straight away and the attitude was to win the ball and go forward. We flew into tackles. I was never worried about reaction. There’s always been one.

“In football you’ve got to earn it. They made mistakes. Brucey (Steve Bruce) has mentioned he’s not happy with the mistakes, but we made them make them with our pressing and attitude. We made it hard for them.”
