Ryan Mason has revealed his fears that he would never make it at Tottenham.

The academy product has finally forced his way into the first team and has impressed in his four games for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

At 23, Mason is a relatively late developer and he had loan spells at Yeovil, Doncaster, Millwall and Swindon, as well as French club Lorient, before he was given a chance.

Mason said: “I had offers to move on and I kept going out on loan. But all along I wanted to play at Spurs.

Five things we learnt at Manchester City v Tottenham

“I always believed I was good enough. If I hadn’t believed that, I would have left. There have been times when I’ve been out on loan when I knew I would have had opportunities back at Spurs if I’d stayed, and I’ve had other circumstances where injuries have hampered me.”

Mason is the latest to work through the junior ranks at Spurs, although the next challenge is to establish himself. Andros Townsend, Tom Carroll, Harry Kane and Nabil Bentaleb have also forced their way into the reckoning in recent seasons, although Carroll is now on loan at Swansea while the other three are fighting for regular places.
