Roy Hodgson has heaped praise on full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and called on the 20-year-old to build on his performance in the opening day win at Fulham.

The clash at Craven Cottage was supposed to be the day that Fulham’s young wonder, Ryan Sessegnon, announced himself on the Premier League stage.

But face to face with one another, Wan-Bissaka won the battle by keeping Sessegnon in check before finally getting the better of the 18-year-old in fine style by setting up Wilfried Zaha to round out the game.

After impressing in his seven Premier League appearances last season - with strong performances against Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea in his first three outings - Hodgson wants the full-back to use his eighth as a springboard this term.

“I thought he was excellent, both defensively and offensively,” Hodgson told Standard Sport.

“One can only hope that he will go from strength to strength.

“Playing his eighth game in the opening game of the season in a fantastic atmosphere against a team that has just come up, and a player in Ryan Sessegnon who has had a wonderful season and is obviously a bit of a flier."

“So to do what he did today, he will sleep well tonight and if you [in the media] are going to give him a few pats on the back, I am more than happy to add my voice in the praise, because I thought he did very well.”
