Roy Hodgson says he is eager to strengthen his Crystal Palace squad when the January transfer window opens as injuries continue to pile up.

Hodgson was without six players as Palace rescued a draw against arch-rivals Brighton on Monday night through Wilfried Zaha’s wonderful equaliser.

Palace spent £11m in the summer bringing in James McCarthy and Andre Ayew with Gary Cahill arriving on a on a free alongside Victor Camarasa and Stephen Henderson on loan.

The Eagles also banked £50m through the sale of Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United and hopes he can convince Palace’s American owners to “release some money” in the coming weeks.

“We don’t really go into the transfer market but I’m trying to persuade the American owners in particular that this is something we really do need to do,” Hodgson said.

“I thought we needed to do it in the summer and didn’t succeed in getting the players we thought were necessary to improve our squad then, nothing has changed still the same positions.”

Zaha has once again been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park with Chelsea keen on the Palace talisman. Hodgson will continue to count on the 27-year-old however knowing the club are not in a position where they have to sell.

“My only solace with Wilf is that he has got a three-and-a-half year contract and as far as I know the club is in no desperate need to sell him. We aren’t about to go bankrupt so as far as I am concerned.

"I’m counting on Wilf, I’m delighted to be working with Wilf but when the transfer window is coming around I can never say exactly what will happen I will have to adjust, as will the club to anything that comes our way. “
