Cristiano Ronaldo believes Lionel Messi will take the 2015 Ballon D’Or despite having had what he believes was the best season of his career.

The award has become a key battle ground between the world’s two best players, who have been the only winners since it merged with the FIFA world player of the year award in 2010.

Ronaldo plundered a total of 61 goals in 2014/15, three more than Lionel Messi and became the first player in Spanish football to pass the 50 goal mark five seasons on the bounce.

Speaking on the Jonathan Ross show which will be aired on ITV on Saturday night, Ronaldo said: “To be honest I think Messi is going to win this year because this kind of trophy, it depends on votes.”

He claims not to be overly worried however and is happy with his own performances, adding: “I did probably the best season of my career which is good and I was the highest scorer in Europe.”

And the Portuguese has vowed to continue playing at the top, insisting he has no plans to step aside just yet.

“I'm still young I think," he said. "I am 30 but look 25. I want to play for six or seven years more and think I am still able to win.

“In my mind I want to finish in the top level, I want to finish with dignity so in a good club. It doesn't mean that to go USA or Qatar or Dubai is not good, but I don't see myself (going there)."

The full interview will be aired Saturday at 9.45 on ITV.
