Former Manchester United and West Ham defender Rio Ferdinand has warned players who failed to force a move away from their clubs in the summer window that their teammates will push them away if they don’t give ‘100%’.

After Alexis Sanchez, Ross Barkley, Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk all failed to secure a move away from their respective clubs over the summer, Ferdinand was asked whether or not teammates would welcome them back into their sides.

“For me it’s all down one thing,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“Does he come in and act professionally at the training ground?

“If he comes in and says ‘listen I’ll hold my hands up I do want to leave, I’ve not been allowed to but you will still get 100% commitment from me and you’ll still see that day in day out’ then you respect that and say ‘yeah, you’re still with us’ and you continue until the day you leave this club.

“If there is any negativity or you think that he’s giving anything less than 100%, the players will sniff it and they will wean that guy out.”

Out of the high profile players to have ended up staying put, Arsenal’s Sanchez was the only one involved as the Premier League returned from the international break, coming off the bench to a mixed reception at the Emirates during their 3-0 win over Bournemouth.
