Former Chelsea and Porto defender Ricardo Carvalho believes Jose Mourinho has been damaged by the Blues’ losing streak this term, but feels they could go on to win the competition if they get through to the knockout phase.

He said: “Mourinho can’t live with defeat, that’s why he isn’t doing great. Despite that, I think he’s the right man to turn things around at Chelsea.

“If they qualify, Chelsea can go a long way in the Champions League. They can knock out anyone in Europe. Chelsea are favourites because they’re at home and only need a draw, but the smallest details decide these types of games and Porto have an outstanding team.”

As Standard Sport revealed yesterday, captain John Terry will return to the side after missing the last two weeks with an ankle injury. Ramires is also set to feature after recovering from a leg muscle problem.

How Chelsea can qualify for the Champions League knockout stages

Southampton and Portugal defender Jose Fonte said: “Porto will have to be organised and compact defensively, do well on the counter-attack, and exploit the weaknesses and lack of confidence among the Chelsea team. But if there is someone who can get Chelsea out of this situation, it’s Mourinho.”
