Bobby Madley has sensationally quit as a Premier League referee.

The circumstances around the 32-year-old’s decision are unclear but the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL) said he has “decided to relocate due to a change in his personal circumstances”.

Madley was one of 18 full-time professional referees and was well-regarded at the Premier League. He took charge of 91 Premier League matches since 2013 and refereed last year’s Community Shield season opener.

Madley, from West Yorkshire, was on Fifa’s list and the Premier League had high hopes he would become one of the leading referees in Europe.

He was not involved during the first weekend of this Premier League season and a statement from the PGMOL said: “Bobby Madley is no longer employed by us. We understand that he has decided to relocate due to a change in his personal circumstances.”
