Real Madrid will not return for Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea in January after last week's botched move for the Spaniard.

De Gea looked set for a move to the Bernabeu on deadline day before the transfer fell through because the deal was not processed in time.

With one year to go on his Old Trafford deal, United risk losing the world class goalkeeper for free next summer and will likely be keen to make the most of their final opportunity to cash in on De Gea in the New Year.

The Spain international, who was brought to Old Trafford for £19million in 2011, is set on a move to Madrid and not expected to sign a new contract at United, but Los Blancos will not attempt to strike a deal during the winter transfer window.

"We will certainly not sign De Gea in January," the Blancos supremo told Cadena COPE.

"Madrid did its job as best it could. We did not get there on time because Manchester does not have the necessary experience to tackle these things on the last day, as happened last year with Coentrao."
