The numbers speak for themselves; Cristiano Ronaldo is Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer.

"Your name is already a legend", declared Los Blancos president Florentino Perez as the Spanish side marked their number seven's remarkable achievement on Friday afternoon.

However, Madrid may just have jumped the gun and the Portuguese forward's champagne might need to be put back on ice.

Officially, Ronaldo is still level with Raul's tally of 323 goals.

But the club, and some sections of the Spanish media, believe that Ronaldo has already surpassed the total after his midweek double against Malmo in the Champions League.

They argue that Ronaldo's shot against Real Sociedad five years ago, which looped over the wall and into the net after deflecting off of Pepe's back, belongs to the Portuguese, not his Brazilian teammate.

Ronaldo was thrilled to be recognised for his achievement at the Bernabeu.

"I would never have imagined when I put on this shirt for the first time that I would be the team's best goal scorer," he told the club's official website.

"I am very happy. Firstly, I want to thank my team mates because without them it would never have been possible."

Ronaldo's next chance to officially break the record will arrive on Sunday during the La Liga clash against fierce rivals Atletico Madrid.
