Staying put? Sterling will continue contract talks at the end of the season

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has said Raheem Sterling is expected to stay at the club for a very long time.

The England international has shelved talks over a new deal until the summer after rejecting a new contract worth a reported £100,000-a-week.

Ayre has said the Anfield club respects Sterling's decision to put aside discussions until the end of the season.

Sterling recently admitted in a BBC interview that links to Arsenal were flattering and insisted his career choices are 'motivated by trophies not money'.

But Liverpool are confident the 20-year-old will remain at Anfield.

"Raheem's agent has asked that we park all discussions regards his future until the summer," Ayre told Sky Sports News. "We respect that.

"Raheem is a Liverpool player and has over two years left on his contract. We expect Raheem Sterling to be here for a long time."

Sterling scored the opening goal as the Reds closed the gap to the top-four with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Monday.
