Radamel Falcao hopes to put his ‘difficult’ experience at Manchester United behind him and impress at this summer’s Copa America.

Louis van Gaal’s side opted against making the striker’s move to Old Trafford permanent after scoring just four goals in 29 appearances for the club.

Jorge Mendes, his agent, also represents Blues boss Jose Mourinho, and Falcao is believed to be prepared to take a significant pay-cut to seal a move to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Costa Rica, Falcao – who missed last summer’s World Cup through injury – is determined to impress for his country.

“For me this is a new opportunity to be here at this Copa America,” he told reporters. “I do not necessarily see it as a rematch for not being able to play in the World Cup - they're completely different tournaments - but this does mark my return to a big competition with my national team. I always play with a lot of hope and confidence, and like I said earlier, this really is a new opportunity.”

“Everyone knows it was a difficult and complicated season for me,” he continued. “I didn't have the opportunity to play as much as I would have liked.”
