FIFA’s anti-racism taskforce was meeting for the first time today as president Sepp Blatter said he was “appalled” by chants directed at AC Milan stars last night.

Play was suspended for two minutes during the 0-0 draw as some visiting Roma fans targeted players including Mario Balotelli (above).

Blatter tweeted: “Appalled to read about racist abuse in Serie A last night. Tackling this issue is complex, but we’re committed to action, not just words.”

The Swiss pledged stronger action after Milan’s Kevin-Prince Boateng was abused during a match in January. Boateng was appointed to the taskforce, which gathered in Zurich today and also featured Premier League referee Howard Webb, FA chief Darren Bailey and FARE chief Piara Powar.

The taskforce proposed having officials at stadia to identify acts of discrimination and gather evidence.

They want sanctions applied in two stages with a warning, fine, or the playing of a match behind closed doors increasing to point deductions, expulsion from a competition, or relegation.

And the panel want associations and clubs to be responsible for the actions of their players, officials and supporters.

The proposals will be included in a resolution to be presented to FIFA Congress this month.
