Carlos Carvalhal, Mark Warburton and Nigel Pearson are the new front-runners for the QPR job after Tim Sherwood pulled out of the running to take over at Loftus Road.

Sherwood had been the preferred choice of QPR director of football Les Ferdinand but is thought to have had reservations about working within the club’s tight financial budget.

The 50-year-old has not worked as a manager since leaving Aston Villa in 2015 and felt Rangers was not the right opportunity for him.

Carvalhal left Swansea following their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, while Warburton has been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2017. Former Leicester manager Pearson was sacked as manager of OH Leuven in Belgium’s second division in February.

Warburton appeals to QPR because of the job he did at west London rivals Brentford and his record of working with young players within a restricted budget.

Marc Bircham, the former QPR midfielder, has also come under consideration and been interviewed along with ex-Oxford United manager Michael Appleton. No compensation fee would be required to hire any of these candidates.

Rangers paid a fine of almost £42million in July for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules and they will need to reduce their budgets significantly next season.

Caretaker John Eustace is set to be in charge for Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest.
