Premier League final day: Permutations affecting Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Man Utd

Tony Mogan12 May 2019

The final day of the Premier League is here and after a breathless 37 gameweeks, we still do not have a champion.

Manchester City hold their fate in their own hands after Vincent Kompany’s stunning winner against Leicester City on Monday but Liverpool’s challenge isn’t over yet with just a point separating the two sides.

Those two have been duelling out on their own for some time now but there is still some intrigue over how Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United will end the season.

Standard Sport assesses some of the key permutations ahead of the final round of fixtures.

The title race

It is simple as far as City are concerned, beat Brighton at the Amex and they will be crowned champions on 98 points.

Liverpool must beat Wolves at home and pray that Chris Hughton’s side can become the first side to take points off City since Newcastle way back in January.

There are a couple of extraordinary results that could complicate matters.

City have a +4 goal difference advantage on Liverpool, meaning a 4-0 loss to Brighton and a 4-4 draw between Liverpool and Wolves at Anfield would still see Pep Guardiola’s side crowned champions.

A 5-5 draw however would see the title go to Merseyside by virtue of more goals scored.

We won’t hold our breath, however. The bottom line is: a draw or defeat for City coupled with a Liverpool win at home to Wolves will cost them the title.

Top four battle

Chelsea guaranteed themselves the top four finish that could save Maurizio Sarri’s job with victory over Watford last weekend.

They are away to Leicester on the final day and if they can match Tottenham’s result that afternoon, they will finish third.

Tottenham need a point against Everton in north London to make absolutely certain of their fourth place finish – but Arsenal’s hopes of changing that are very slim indeed.

Even if Tottenham lose, Arsenal will need to beat Burnley at Turf Moor and secure an eight-goal swing to dislodge their neighbours on goal difference.

Europa League places

Arsenal enter the final day of the season in fifth but their woeful form on the road means there could yet be more movement.

If Arsenal drop points against Burnley, Manchester United can leapfrog them into fifth place with a win over Cardiff and leave the Gunners finishing sixth for a second consecutive season.

United’s own Champions League hopes were brought to an end after a dismal draw at Huddersfield last week but they can save themselves the possible indignity of starting their season in July with a victory at home to the already-related Bluebirds.

Watford can secure themselves a Europa League place if they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

In such a scenario, whoever finishes sixth would have to begin their Europa League campaign in the second qualifying round during a time in the summer when many other teams are still away on pre-season.

Watford meanwhile are out of the race for qualification via league position and will finish between ninth and 11th, depending on how they fare against West Ham on the final day.

What’s to play for elsewhere in London

Crystal Palace can end the season as high as 11th if results go their way. Victory against Bournemouth would see them finish on 49 points – a Premier League record for the club.

West Ham can finish as high as ninth if results go their way on the final day while Fulham are destined to finish the season in 19th place.

A final day win at home to Newcastle would at least make it four wins from their last five games for Scott Parker and his side.
