Tottenham’s eight losing World Cup semi-finalists and France captain Hugo Lloris are not expected to be part of the club’s pre-season tour to the US at the end of this month.

After losing a second consecutive FA Cup semi-final last season, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino will have the job of picking up his defeated stars from their exertions in Russia when they return for pre-season.

England’s Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier and Danny Rose all played in the 2-1 extra-time defeat to Croatia last night, while Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele started as Belgium lost the other semi-final 1-0 to Lloris’s France on Tuesday.

They will compete in Saturday’s third-place play-off in St Petersburg, with Kane still the front runner for the Golden Boot with six goals to Romelu Lukaku’s four. They are then likely to be given at least three weeks off.

Spurs are due to leave for Los Angeles on July 21 and the players still involved in the World Cup are not expected to be included in the travelling party.

Precisely when they report for pre-season training is yet to be decided by the club’s coaching staff and could be based on how much they played in Russia and their condition on returning to the UK.

Tottenham will play a final pre-season friendly of the summer against Girona on August 4, exactly three weeks after the third-place play-off, in which some of the semi-finalists can be expected to feature.

Trippier, who was one of the best players at the World Cup, will be assessed by England’s medical staff today after limping off in extra-time time with groin injury, having opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick. However, Heung-min Son, who scored twice as South Korea went out in the group stage, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen and Colombia’s Davinson Sanchez are expected to be included. Denmark and Colombia lost in the last 16.

Spurs will play Roma (July 25), Barcelona (July 28) and AC Milan (July 31). In summer 2016, following the European Championships in France, 10 of Spurs’ 11 participants were left out of Pochettino’s squad for the pre-season trip to Australia.
