Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea hit out at his side's inability to create chances after the 1-0 defeat Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Teenage midfielder Matty Longstaff, making his debut for the Magpies, scored the winning goal on 72 minutes as Man Utd fell to yet another defeat on the road.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have now failed to score in each of their last three away games in all competitions, following the goalless draw at AZ Alkmaar in midweek.

The defeat leaves United down in 12th place in the league table and De Gea could not hide his frustration at the lack of creativity in United's attacking play.

"We didn't create any proper chances," De Gea told Sky Sports.

"We defended well. The team needs to step up. We have some big injuries but that’s no excuse.

"We are Manchester United, we need to keep training hard, fighting and winning games.

Solskjaer has come under pressure after a run of five victories in 23 games, having won eight of his first 10 matches when he was caretaker manager.

De Gea, who recently committed his future to the club by signing a new long-term contract, believes it is the most difficult period at the club since his arrival in 2011.

Asked what United must improve, the Spaniard replied: "Everything. A lot of things to improve. I don’t know what to say. [We will] keep trying, fighting, improving every day.

"It’s a hard moment for us. The most difficult time since I’ve been here. I don’t know why, what is happening. Sorry to the fans. We will keep fighting.

"Come on, we conceded a goal from a comer. That cannot happen. It’s unacceptable."
