Heung-min Son admits it has been a wrench to be separated from Kevin Wimmer, who left Tottenham to join Stoke City at the end of the transfer window.

“I’m a bit sad because he was and is still my best friend,” said the South Korean, who formed a strong relationship with the Austrian during their time together at Tottenham.

“Sometimes I miss him already but if he’s your best friend you have to be happy. If he’s happy at Stoke then I am as well.

“I text him maybe every two days and he’s very happy. He’s played two games already and I’m looking forward to seeing him. Everyone’s my best friend here now – but not like Kevin!”

Spurs take on Barnsley in the League Cup third round on Tuesday night, and Son says that the competition represents a good opportunity for the club.

Spurs were last on the honours list in 2008, when they lifted the League Cup. They have reached the final of the competition twice since, losing to Manchester United in 2009 and Chelsea in 2015.

They enter this season’s tournament tomorrow, hosting Championship side Barnsley at Wembley in the third round, and Son told Standard Sport: “I can see in their faces how hungry the players are. Everyone’s ready for the League Cup, the Champions League, the Premier League and the FA Cup when it starts.”

The clash will be Spurs’ third successive home game at Wembley, where they have had mixed fortunes in the past week.

They beat Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday but played out a frustrating goalless draw against Swansea on Saturday. “It’s very disappointing,” said Son. “We created a lot of chances but this is football sometimes.”
