Roy Hodgson has warned that James McArthur could have aggravated a pre-existing back injury after the midfielder hobbled off with a back injury during Crystal Palace's 2-0 defeat to Leicester .

Second half goals from Calgar Soyuncu and Jamie Vardy saw the visitors take all three points. The Eagles defended well but, with McArthur deployed on the right of a front three away from his usual midfield berth, were stunted going forward.

There was also concern for Gary Cahill, Palace's standout player so far this season, after a clash of heads left him flat out on the turf for almost five minutes before the game was stopped in the closing stages with blood pouring from a cut on his head. Hodgson, however, is hopeful he'll be back in training come Tuesday as the Eagles prepare to take on his former club Chelsea.

Hodgson revealed that McArthur had been suffering from a touch of back pain ahead of the game and warned that it could be a nasty injury.

"The worse one is McArthur because he has been struggling with a back injury," said Hodgson. "He definitely felt his back quite seriously during that second half, that's why we had to take him off. He was actually having a very good game but his back injury prevented him from continuing.

"As for Gary Cahill and Cheikhou Kouyate they were blows to the head, which we see more and more these days but I don't think either of those two will be out of training on Tuesday but they may have a sore head this evening and they will need tomorrow to recover."

Hodgson's side must now prepare for games against Chelsea and Liverpool either side of the international break and, as ever, he wants his players to be as tactically astute as possible.

"We have a day off tomorrow and then we train on Tuesday and try to do as much preparation for the game to try and get our tactical side of the game as good as we can get it," said the former England manager. "Preparing for another talented team and an awful lot of players in the team with the capacity individually to hurt you. We can do no more than to accept that today was not going to be a day where we could get the points we were hoping to get.

"We go to Chelsea with the hope we're going to do it there instead."
