The Premier League has announced a record 90 positive Covid cases in its latest round of testing.

Last week’s results saw 42 cases identified among players and club staff, which was, at the time the most since the pandemic began but that number more than doubled in the period between December 13 and 19.

A record 12,345 tests were administered last week, with players and staff now required to take daily lateral flow tests in order to visit training grounds, as well as twice-weekly PCRs.

The Premier League also confirmed that 92 per cent of players and staff have now received at either their first, second or third vaccination dose, with 77 per cent of players double-jabbed, up from 68 per cent when the figures were last released in October.

The news comes as the Premier League announced plans to continue with Christmas fixture list without a circuit breaker following a meeting of all 20 clubs on Monday.

The idea had been floated of postponing one round of fixtures over the festive period in order to allow clubs the chance to get their outbreaks under control, but the decision has been made to play on where possible.

Six of the ten matches scheduled for last weekend were postponed because of outbreaks at various clubs, while several in the games which did go ahead were forced to field depleted sides.
