Petr Cech has told Wayne Rooney he should move to Chelsea if he wants a fresh challenge this summer.

Rooney’s long-term future at Manchester United is about to be decided as he meets for talks with new manager David Moyes for the first time today.

The England international continues to be linked with a £20million move to Chelsea, Arsenal and Paris St-Germain after a troubled campaign last term, which ended with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson suggesting he wanted to leave.

Rooney (above) has denied it, while United do not want to sell the striker to a rival.

But Cech feels it will give Chelsea a major boost if he ends up at Stamford Bridge and said: “I could see him in a Chelsea shirt. He’s a great player and you always want to see great players in your team.

“Players can change shirts and obviously he had a fantastic career with United and sometimes players need new challenges.

“So if that happened, he will be welcome to our squad but now we are only speculating about it so we will have to see what this week will bring.”

United’s unwillingness to sell to Chelsea is not the only stumbling block as the Blues are unlikely to match the £250,000-a-week salary that Rooney earns.

That would make him the highest earner by a significant margin at the Bridge as Fernando Torres is currently the best paid player on £175,000 a week.

Chelsea’s first-choice striker remains Napoli forward Edinson Cavani but the club are reluctant to meet the Italian club’s £54million asking price.
