The odds on Dennis Bergkamp succeeding Steve Clarke at Reading dramatically plummeted overnight as he dropped to 8/1 to take the reins in Berkshire.

The Arsenal legend emerged as one of the shock contenders for the hot seat at the Madejski Stadium after Clark was sacked on Friday morning following a run of just one win in eight games.

Bergkamp is currently the assistant manager at Ajax and was reportedly considered by the Reading board before they appointed Clark in December 2014.

The former Netherlands international, who scored 120 goals for Arsenal in 423 appearances, was out as far as 33/1 to take charge of the Royals on Friday evening but he has since been widely backed to take his first managerial post.

To become next Reading boss

Pearson 1/2

McDermott 9/4

Phil Parkinson  8/1

Bergkamp 8/1 (from 33/1)

Bergkamp remains behind former Reading boss Brian McDermott, Bradford's Phil Parkinson and front-runner Nigel Pearson, but whoever takes charge will fancy their chances of reversing the club's fortunes.

The Royals sit ninth in the Championship table, just one point off a play-off spot.
