No Champions League football for Arsene Wenger's Arsenal successor next season

Arsenal will not be playing Champions League football next season after being knocked out of the Europa League semi-finals by Atletico Madrid.

Diego Costa's goal was enough for Atletico to seal a 1-0 win in Madrid on Thursday night, and advance to the Europa League final with a 2-1 aggregate victory over the Gunners.

Following a disappointing domestic campaign, Arsenal had hoped to follow Manchester United's example by winning the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League - a path the Red Devils took last season.

But having been knocked out of the Europa League, Arsenal are mathematically unable to qualify for Europe's elite club competition next season - leaving Arsene Wenger's replacement looking at another year of Europa football.

Arsenal currently sit 14 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with just three games to go. The Gunners can still finish fifth, but will require Chelsea to lose their final three games and see a goal difference swing of seven.

The season could end on a more sour note for Arsenal if Burnley manage to take seventh spot off them, though that would realistically require the Clarets to win at the Emirates on Sunday and for Arsenal to lose another game during the run-in.
