German legend Paul Breitner has called on national coach Joachim Low to drop Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil.

The 25-year-old has faced questions over his performances in Brazil, with many suggesting the Gunners man does not warrant a place in Low’s starting XI.

Ozil scored Germany’s winner as the World Cup semi-finalists laboured past Algeria earlier in the competition, but it has done little to sway the opinions of his detractors.

And now former German full-back Breitner has joined a growing number of voices calling for Ozil, who is playing in an unfavoured position on the right, to lose his starting place.

"If [Low] is bold, he'll say: 'I will not play with only 10 people' and drop Mesut Ozil," Breitner told TZ.

"That would be the next step for world titles and above all a big step for the good of the team. Nine men are torturing themselves for 90 minutes and he's going for a walk.

"That's not what you do at a World Cup."
