Nicolas Anelka: France players had to strike

Striker: Nicolas Anelka said 'everyone in the squad was united'
11 April 2012

Nicolas Anelka today insisted France's World Cup squad were united throughout their wretched campaign in South Africa.

The players went on strike in support of Anelka after the Chelsea striker was sent home from the tournament following a bust-up with controversial coach Raymond Domenech.

Les Bleus failed to win a game at the World Cup and reports in the French media have suggested some squad members had been coerced into taking part in the strike ahead of their final group game but Anelka insists that was not the case. "Everyone and I mean everyone was united," said the 31-year-old.

"In the case of mutiny, everything and its opposite was said. If there were players who wanted to train, they should speak now. But I am 100 per cent certain that nobody will."

He added: "If it was not from me that everything was precipitated, this would have happened with someone else. It had to explode."
