Manchester United visit St James' Park tonight to face Newcastle in their first Premier League fixture back following the international break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have endured a dismal start to the 2020/21 season, with a 6-1 home thumping by Tottenham making it two defeats from three games - both at home - and 11 goals conceded.

Only the Carabao Cup has managed to bring some brief respite with wins over Luton Town and Brighton, while fans seem unconvinced by their late transfer business with Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri all signed while no1 target Jadon Sancho remained at Borussia Dortmund.

Looking to heap more pressure on Solskjaer is a Newcastle team that have won two of their opening four matches this term - including a comfortable victory over Burnley last time out - and are also through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United

Manchester United were absolutely wretched against Tottenham, with their defensive shortcomings ruthlessly exposed time and time again.

All of their wins so far this season have come on the road, but this is likely to prove a tough test against a Newcastle side that now boast greater firepower and will no doubt relish the chance to deepen Solskjaer's woes ahead of a brutal run of fixtures that includes meetings with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal and Everton.

A point apiece seems likely.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Manchester United have won 29 of the 50 previous Premier League meetings between these two sides, with just seven triumphs for Newcastle and 14 draws.

One of those Toon victories came last season, when Matty Longstaff netted a debut winner at St James' Park in October.

The Red Devils avenged that loss on Boxing Day, however, with Martial netting twice in a comfortable 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.
