Eddie Howe has delivered a positive injury update for Newcastle ahead of this weekend’s clash with Arsenal.

The Gunners welcome the Toon to north London looking to close the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool, while the Magpies continue their quest to qualify for European football.

On Friday, Howe confirmed that Alexander Isak could return to the squad after suffering a groin problem at the end of January.

Joe Willock is also nearing contention after over three months out with an Achilles tendon injury, while Fabian Schar has been passed fit after hurting his wrist in last week’s draw with Bournemouth.

Howe told reporters: “[Isak and Willock] trained this week and it's been good to see them back on the grass.

“It’s been a long time for Joe, he's a huge player for us. It’s been great to see him back in the group, he’s a very popular member of the squad. Really pleased for him.

“Alex, another important player and he’s trained really well. We've got one more training session today - we won’t take any risk - but we’re pleased with their progress.”

Willock was a revelation at St. James’ Park having signed on loan from Arsenal during the 2020-21 campaign, a move he made permanent that summer.

Having only managed six appearances in an injury-hit season, Howe praised the midfielder for his attitude during his lay-off.

The Newcastle boss said: “You go through lots of emotions with the players.

“He's been battling so hard to come back and he's had setbacks along the way. He just wants to play and be able to express himself. He's had a limitation placed on him because of his body.

“He's handled it well and we've seen him mature the last few months. As long as he comes back in full health, we'll see a better Joe Willock for that experience.”
