Toby Alderweireld has admitted Tottenham continue to be affected by the delay in moving back to White Hart Lane.

Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Wembley on Monday night, just days after chairman Daniel Levy confirmed their new 62,062-seater stadium will not be ready until the New Year.

The project has been blighted a number of issues that have held it up and Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been forced to use the national stadium as a temporary home for far longer than planned.

Spurs had hoped to start the season in their new arena but during the summer that target was pushed back to September 15 and then again to later in the year before their remaining Champions League group stage matches were moved to Wembley.

Levy’s latest announcement pushed the timetable back further and also confirmed the club has to borrow an additional £237million to cover the costs.

Monday’s game was also played on an awful surface given just 24 hours to recover from an NFL game.

Despite the problems, Spurs have made their best start to a Premier League season in amassing 21 points from their 10 games and ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Wolves, Alderweireld said: “We never used Wembley as an excuse and we will not do that now. But it has affected us.

"I am grateful to play at Wembley, it is a very historical place, but it is not the same feeling as White Hart Lane. There we had a special home feeling.

“We did very well to be successful at Wembley. But I know the club is doing everything in their power to play as quickly as possible in our stadium. It is on the same spot as White Hart Lane, so that is going to be special and to play in that sort of stadium will be wonderful and give us a boost.”

Spurs have taken giant strides under Pochettino during his four years in charge but the team continues to face criticism for an absence of trophies in that time, in addition to fears they will not be able to compete for the title this season after opting against signing any new players this summer.

“It’s even more positive that people don’t see it as a good start,” said Alderweireld.

“That’s the kind of level we have reached. We are never satisfied, we always try to improve.

“We are doing everything we can to get [silverware], we try to play good football — it is not easy, but we try and we can improve a lot more and we do the best we can.”
