Millwall have called for the sale of land around The Den to be stopped following revelations about Lewisham Council’s decision to seek compulsory purchase orders.

It has emerged that accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers, acting on behalf of Lewisham, could not carry out due diligence on the two parent companies that own property developers Renewal before the council agreed in 2013 to sell the freeholds of the land to them.

PWC were given “limited” access to the offshore company and were not allowed to see Renewal’s latest financial figures.

Lewisham Council say that due diligence was done before the CPO powers were granted in September this year. But the CPO decision was referred back to Lewisham’s Mayor and Cabinet by the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee who raised concerns about the scheme’s viability and deliverability.
