Millwall claim first win of season

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett believes the 2-1 Championship win over Peterborough at London Road provided his side with the perfect tonic after Saturday's home defeat against Blackpool.

The Lions secured their first three points of the season after dominating three quarters of this clash against out-of-sorts Posh.

Jackett's men fell behind to a fierce George Boyd blast after 11 minutes, but a first Millwall goal for summer recruit Scott Malone - who tapped in an Alan Dunne cross - brought them level just before the break, and they settled the contest in the 64th minute when Darius Henderson converted a fine pass from strike partner Andy Keogh.

The margin of victory could have been greater, with James Henry twice denied by the woodwork and Posh goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik making a host of fine saves to keep Millwall at bay.

"We had a disappointing start when being beaten at home at the weekend, but this match could not come quickly enough for us," Jackett said.

"It was ideal to have the opportunity to put things right only as few days later and that is exactly what the lads did.

"They produced an excellent performance which should provide strong belief to both themselves and the supporters that we can have a good season. We know that we'll create chances when playing the sort of football we did tonight."

Jackett was particularly excited by the prospect of Henderson and Keogh forming a deadly attacking force, but admitted fellow frontman Dany N'Guessan was becoming frustrated by a prolonged transfer saga.

He continued: "We struggled to get Andy and Darius onto the pitch together last season. I think it only happened two or three times.

"But I firmly believe they can play well together and score plenty of goals for us.

"I won't close the door on Dany either, even though he has made it clear he wants to move to Charlton. The problem is that we have had better offers from other clubs."

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson refused to press the panic button despite a pointless start to the Championship campaign.

Posh roared out of the traps in their opening home league outing and fully deserved their advantage provided by an angled 15-yard drive from transfer-listed Boyd.

But they quickly ran out of ideas, and Ferguson had no complaints about the result.

The Scot, whose side lost 2-0 at Leicester at the weekend, said: "Sometimes you have to accept the opposition were better in almost all departments. Tonight was one of those nights.

"We started so well just as we hoped we would, but the goal seemed to have completely the opposite effect that I expected.

"We were disappointing from then on and there is no doubt that Millwall deserved their victory. I made changes at half-time, which I would have done even if we had still been ahead, but they didn't have the desired effect.

"It's not been a great start in terms of points or the performance tonight, but there is no point in beating ourselves up about it.

"Everyone has these days in football. We just need to make sure we go out there against Leeds on Saturday and redeem ourselves."
