Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino says he is "proud" of his players' effort, despite being knocked out of the Europa League by Gent tonight.

Christian Eriksen's early effort cancelled out Gent's lead from the first leg but Harry Kane's own goal soon put the Belgian outfit back in front.

Dele Alli received the first red card of his career on the stroke of half time, leaving the north Londoners with it all to do after the break.

Victor Wanyama's measured finish gave the hosts a lifeline but substitute Jeremy Perbet poked home late on to book Gent's place in the last-16.

Pochettino had watched his side fail to produce at the national stadium yet again but the Argentine coach was able to take some positives from the second-half display.

"I am very disappointed," he told BT Sport. "Once again we were excited to play today in front of our fans.

"We started well and scored. The tie was open but we conceded a goal in one action in the first half. After that it was complicated.

"I was very proud. We were brave and created chances and scored the second but could not get another. In the second half we played with energy," Pochettino added.

Spurs must now turn their attention back to the race for a Premier League top-four finish and host Stoke City at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
